Flat cloth shoes with silk embroidery on the uppers, usually floral (peony, lotus, butterfly). A standard component of women's traditional dress from at least the Han dynasty. In 20th-century horror cinema, a 'red embroidered shoe' (红绣花鞋) became a recurring motif for vengeful female ghosts.
