After Ögedei succeeded as khan, he sent armies that destroyed the Jin dynasty.

He made Karakorum the Mongol capital. In his reign the Mongols ended the Jin in 1234 and rode west as far as Hungary; news of his death in 1241 brought the armies home. The Yuan later honoured him as 元太宗.
