Tips

culture
Almost exclusively a place-name character. The best-known example is 北碚 (Beibei), a scenic district of 重庆 on the Jialing River that became a wartime academic refuge. Another is 虾蟆碚 in Hubei, subject of a poem by the Song writer Ouyang Xiu.

Components

radical
shí
stone; rock
The stone radical on the left marks as something rocky — fittingly, the places named with it are rocky riverside spots and shoals.
phonetic
pǒu
to spit out (phonetic)
The right side supplies the sound (the same phonetic gives bèi in 'times/double' and 'to accompany'), so the reading is easy to recall by analogy.
