The name is usually traced to the gate: heavy black wooden doors in a frame of stone slabs, which reminded people of an old storehouse (库) door. Built from the late 19th century to the 1930s in rows along narrow lanes, 弄堂, they housed much of old Shanghai. 新天地 is a well-known restored block.
