2indexing radical for a small group of characters involving feet pointing outward or stepping apart
Tips
usage
癶 never appears on its own in modern writing. The two characters a learner is most likely to meet under it are 登 (dēng, to climb / ascend) and 癸 (guǐ, the tenth Heavenly Stem). In 登 the radical sits on top, depicting two feet stepping up.
history
Most dictionaries now list only a handful of entries under it; in handwriting it is easy to confuse with the top of 登 or with 癸.
Radical
Splayed FeetKangxi #105
Tiny indexing radical with low productivity. Practical value is mainly recognising the top of 登 (climb) and 癸 (Heavenly Stem #10). Easy to confuse visually with 八 placed above another component, but 癶 has the distinctive inward-curving 'two heels' shape.
