独 (single) + 角 (horn) + 鲸 (whale) = 'single-horn whale'. The 'horn' is actually a spiraled left canine tooth that grows up to 3 meters long. Medieval Europeans sold these tusks as unicorn horns; the Chinese name preserves the illusion.
