Portuguese traders settled 澳门 in 1557 and administered it as the first European colony in East Asia. Sovereignty returned to the PRC on 1999-12-20, establishing the 澳门特别行政区 under the 'one country, two systems' framework. Macao keeps Portuguese as a co-official language until at least 2049 and is the only place in China where casino gambling is legal.

In everyday speech 澳门 alone is usually enough; the full 澳门特别行政区 shows up on passports, legal texts and state news. The official abbreviation is 澳特区 or simply 澳门.
