Tips

history
Originates from the 诗经 (Book of Songs), 陈风·泽陂: a portrait of love-sickness so intense that tears () and nasal mucus () pour down like a downpour (滂沱).
memory
Break it apart: = tears, = nasal flow, 滂沱 = a torrential downpour. Together: tears falling like rain. Highly literary, never use this for ordinary crying; reserve it for grief or scenes of devastation.
