China's first comprehensive civil code, passed in May 2020 and effective January 2021. It consolidated and replaced the older Marriage Law, Inheritance Law, Contract Law, Property Law and Tort Law. The 'divorce cooling-off period' (离婚冷静期, líhūn lěngjìngqī) and personal-information protection clauses were widely debated additions.
