株洲 is a classic 'railway city' — it grew around the junction of the Beijing-Guangzhou and Shanghai-Kunming lines in the 1950s and became China's flagship producer of electric locomotives (CRRC Zhuzhou). Literally 'zhū' (tree stump) + 'zhōu' (islet) — the old riverside settlement was surrounded by stumps of logged trees.
