Tips

history
Lin Yutang introduced 幽默 yōumò — a phonetic rendering of English 'humor' — into modern Chinese in the 1920s, and the word stuck. He wrote most of his famous books (My Country and My People, The Importance of Living) in English for Western audiences. He also invented a Chinese typewriter in 1947 that nearly bankrupted him.
