The town, earlier called Changnan, took its present name in 1004 from
景德, the reign title of the Northern Song emperor
宋真宗, when its kilns began making wares for the court. Under the Ming and Qing its imperial kilns made the
青花瓷 (blue-and-white porcelain) shipped across Asia and to Europe, and it is still called the
瓷都, 'porcelain capital'.
