Per 《新华词典》: 新华社 is short for 新华通讯社 (Xinhua News Agency). Founded 1931 in Jiangxi as the Red China News Agency (红色中华通讯社), renamed Xinhua in 1937 in Yan'an. Today reports directly to the State Council and is the official voice of the PRC government, with branches in 180+ countries.
