Although Tolui never became Great Khan himself, his line dominated the dynasty: his sons Möngke (蒙哥), Kublai (忽必烈, founder of Yuan), and Hulagu (旭烈兀, founder of the Ilkhanate) divided much of the Mongol empire between them.
