Combines two stories: the Warring States strategist Su Qin (苏秦), from 《战国策·秦策》, jabbed his thigh with an awl to stay awake while reading. The Han scholar Sun Jing (孙敬) tied his hair to a rafter so that if he nodded off, the pull would wake him.
