The name goes back to the legendary 彭祖, said to have held a fief here. From 206 BC it was the capital of 项羽's Western Chu, and 刘邦, who defeated him, came from nearby Pei county.
usage
Today's 徐州市 still uses the old name for its central square, 彭城广场, and for many shops and companies.
