居家办公 went mainstream during the 2020-2022 COVID lockdowns, when whole cities (Shanghai, Wuhan) shifted to remote work overnight. Post-pandemic, most Chinese companies have rolled back fully remote arrangements — hybrid (混合办公) is more common now than in the West.

usage

居家 ('stay at home') + 办公 ('do office work'). Synonym: 在家办公 — same meaning, slightly more colloquial. Distinguish from 远程办公 ('remote work' generally, including coworking).
