As a place name, 安南 originates in the Tang-dynasty 安南都护府 (Protectorate General of Annam, est. 679 AD) over what is now northern Vietnam — literally 'pacified south'. As a personal name in modern Chinese media, it almost always refers to Kofi Annan, the first UN Secretary-General from sub-Saharan Africa, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with the UN in 2001.
