Tips

history
His name was 卜商. After Confucius died he taught at 西河 in the state of 魏, where Marquis Wen of Wei took him as his teacher. Tradition credits him with handing down the Book of Songs and the Spring and Autumn, and the old commentary on the mourning-dress chapter of the 仪礼 bears his name.
culture
His words in the Analects give 复旦大学 its motto, 博学而笃志,切问而近思. When his son died he wept until he lost his sight, so 丧明之痛, 'the grief of losing one's sight', came to mean the loss of a son.
