Tips

culture
Rooted in the classical doctrine of 天人感应 (tiānrén gǎnyìng, 'cosmic resonance between Heaven and humanity') formalized by Han-dynasty thinker Dong Zhongshu . Natural disasters, eclipses, and famines were read as Heaven rebuking the emperor — and emperors actually issued (self-blaming edicts) in response.
register
Literary/dramatic register. Modern usage is mostly in historical fiction, religious contexts, or strong moral condemnation ('they deserve divine punishment'). For everyday 'serves them right', use 报应 (bàoyìng, 'karmic retribution') instead.
