Tips

history
From the 8th to the 13th century the area was the heart of two kingdoms, Nanzhao and then the Kingdom of Dali (937–1253), until the Mongols took it. The old town lies between the 苍山 range and 洱海 Lake.
usage
Officially the city is 大理市, seat of the 大理白族自治州. In 大理石 'marble' the city really is meant, since the stone was named after its quarries; in 大理花 'dahlia' the two characters only imitate the sound of the English word.
