From the Southern Song scholar Chen Liang's 《上孝宗皇帝第三书》: 「天下大势之所趋，非人力之所能移也」 — 'the great trend of the world cannot be moved by human force.' The fatalistic tone carries into modern use.
usage
Often used to argue something is inevitable and therefore should be accepted. Pairs well with 是 (is) as the predicate — e.g. X是大势所趋 'X is the way of things.'
