Until the late-1990s 'village-to-village paving' campaign (
村村通工程), most rural Chinese roads were
土路 - making
土路 a recurring image in modernization-era Chinese literature and film as the symbol of the old, unconnected countryside, replaced over a generation by
水泥路 (concrete) and
柏油路 (asphalt).
