Waves slap against the caves with a booming sound, as if someone were striking a bell.
Tips
history
苏轼 made the word famous in 石钟山记 (1084). Doubting the usual explanations of how Stone Bell Mountain got its name, he went by boat at night and found waves pouring into hollow rocks at the waterline, booming on like bells and drums.
mistakes
噌 is chēng only in this word. Elsewhere it is cēng, a whooshing sound: 噌的一声 (with a whoosh).
