mistakes
变得 is followed by an adjective or a description of a state: 变得很冷 'to get very cold'. To turn into a thing or a person, use 变成: 水变成了冰 'the water turned into ice'. Putting a noun after 变得 is a common learner error.
usage
In casual speech the adjective often goes straight after 变: 天变冷了 'it's turned cold'. 变得 is the natural choice before longer descriptions, especially with 越来越 'more and more' or 更 'even more'.
