卢沟桥, built in 1192, was described by Marco Polo as 'the finest bridge in the world' — hence the English name. The 1937 clash here became the trigger for full-scale Sino-Japanese war. The bridge still stands in Beijing's Fengtai district with its 501 (or thereabouts) stone lions, each subtly different.
