博弈 originally referred to two ancient Chinese games:
博 (a board game similar to backgammon) and
弈 (the game of Go, wéiqí). Over time the compound shifted to mean any competitive strategic contest, and in modern usage it corresponds to 'game' in game theory (
博弈论).
