From 王安石《元日》(Wang Anshi, 'New Year's Day,' Northern Song, c. 1069 CE): 爆竹声中一岁除，春风送暖入屠苏。千门万户瞳瞳日，总把新桃换旧符 (With the sound of firecrackers, a year is gone; spring wind warms the Tusu wine. A thousand gates, ten thousand households lit by the rising sun — every one replaces old peachwood charms with new). Wang wrote it the year he launched his reform program; the poem is now one of the most quoted Spring Festival couplets in China.
usage
Reading: 瞳瞳 here = tóngtóng ('brightly dawning / rising-sun bright'), written sometimes as 曈曈. Always paired with 总把新桃换旧符 in the final couplet. Quoted in every Chinese New Year's editorial.
