共和 dates back to the Gonghe Regency (841 BC) in the Western Zhou dynasty, when ministers ruled collectively after King Li was deposed. This is one of the earliest recorded instances of non-monarchical rule in Chinese history, and the term was later repurposed to translate 'republic'.
