全素食 ('full vegetarian') ≈ vegan, distinguishing it from
素食 (sùshí) which in Chinese can include eggs and dairy. A vegan person is more often called
纯素食者 (chúnsùshízhě) or
严格素食者. In Buddhist contexts
全素 also implies no
五辛 (wǔ xīn, the five pungent vegetables: garlic, onion, leek, chive, asafoetida).
