usage
Most neutral in biology: 低等动物/植物 (lower animals/plants — e.g. sponges, algae). Applied to people, 低等 is offensive — use 普通 (ordinary) or 基层 (grassroots) when you mean 'rank-and-file' rather than 'inferior'.
