Tips

culture
When Boya played with mountains in mind, 钟子期 said "lofty, like Mount Tai"; when he thought of flowing water, "vast, like the great rivers". The story gave Chinese 知音 "one who knows the music" for a true friend, 高山流水 for rare understanding, and 伯牙绝弦, Boya cutting his strings, for giving something up once the one person who understood it is gone.
usage
Later storytellers give him a surname as well: in the Ming tale of how he smashed his qin for his friend he is 俞伯牙.
