Ming official Yu Qian organized the successful defense of Beijing in 1449 after Emperor Yingzong was captured by the Oirat Mongols, then was unjustly executed when the emperor was restored. His poem 《石灰吟》 — 粉身碎骨浑不怕,要留清白在人间 — is a staple of Confucian integrity.
