history

Founded on 1 August 1927 in the 南昌起义 (Nanchang Uprising), it fought as the Red Army and then as the 八路军 and 新四军 before taking its present name in the late 1940s. It includes the army, navy, air force and rocket force, and is commanded by the Party's Central Military Commission.

Usually shortened to 解放军. Soldiers are affectionately called 子弟兵 'our own sons and brothers'.
