Formed in 2000 by merging 中南工业大学 (strong in metallurgy and mining), 湖南医科大学 (the former 湘雅医学院 founded by Yale-in-China in 1914) and 长沙铁道学院. A member of the 985/211/双一流 programmes. Often confused with 中南财经政法大学 in Wuhan — different school.
