The date was the ancient
上巳 festival, when people washed in rivers to drive away bad luck;
王羲之's 《
兰亭集序》 Orchid Pavilion Preface records such a gathering on this day in 353. Today the festival is kept mainly by the Zhuang, Li, Yao and She peoples, and Guangxi has made it a public holiday.
