history

The name 高雄 dates from 1920, a Japanese-era rendering of the indigenous Makatao name Takau (打狗, 'beat the dog' in Han characters). The Japanese re-wrote it with more elegant kanji 高雄 (Takao, also a Kyoto place name). In Mandarin the same characters read Gāoxióng, and the name stuck after 1945.
