history

Original Austronesian name was 'Takao'. During Japanese rule (1895-1945), 'Takao' was re-spelled with the Japanese characters 高雄 ('high hero'), pronounced Takao in Japanese. After 1945 the Mandarin reading Gāoxióng stuck. The older romanization 'Kaohsiung' uses Wade-Giles.
