history
释 is the Chinese surname adopted by Buddhist monks since Dao'an (道安, 4th century AD), short for 释迦 (Shìjiā, 'Shakya' — the Buddha's clan). 释子 literally means 'son/disciple of Shakyamuni'. The everyday word for monk is 和尚 (héshang) or 僧人 (sēngrén).
