Largest city in Inner Mongolia by population. The name ("red peak") comes from a nearby red-granite mountain. Chifeng is the birthplace of the Neolithic Hongshan Culture (红山文化, c. 4700-2900 BCE), whose famous C-shaped jade dragon is considered an early icon of Chinese civilisation. Mongolian name: Ulanhad (same meaning).
