败 (defeat, spoil) + 血 (blood) + 病 (disease) — literally 'spoiled-blood disease'. The newer clinical term 败血症 (bàixuèzhèng) with 症 (zhèng, 'condition') is more common in modern medical writing; 败血病 stays in general usage.
