败北 literally means 'defeated, [run] north'. The character
北 originally pictured two people back-to-back (it's the original form of
背 'back'); in ancient warfare, defeated soldiers turned their backs to the enemy and fled — hence 'lose' = 'show one's back'. The directional reading 'north' is a later borrowing.
