This is the subspecies behind nearly every 'famous gorilla' in captivity, including Koko the sign-language gorilla and Harambe at the Cincinnati Zoo. Despite being the most abundant gorilla, it is still classified as Critically Endangered due to poaching and Ebola outbreaks.
