The immigrants toiled with calloused hands and feet to reclaim this wasteland.
Tips
history
From 《荀子·子道》 (xúnzǐ · zǐdào, 'Xunzi: The Way of Sons'): 耕耘树艺,手足胼胝以养其亲 ('plowing and planting until hands and feet are callused, to support one's parents'). 胼 and 胝 both literally mean 'callus.'
memory
Both 胼 (pián) and 胝 (zhī) carry the 月 (flesh) radical — they describe what physical labor does to flesh. Memorize them as a fixed pair: 胼胝 = 'callus,' the wraparound 手...足 frames where the calluses form.
