肖 is pronounced Xiāo in first tone when it's a family name — even though the character reading 'xiào' (fourth tone, as in
肖像 portrait) also exists. Many
肖 families are actually descended from the surname
萧 (Xiāo) and adopted
肖 during 20th-century simplification.
