Two terms coexist in Chinese math:
素数 (sùshù) and
质数 (zhìshù) — both mean "prime number".
质数 is more common in mainland K-12 textbooks;
素数 is preferred in higher mathematics and matches international 'prime' terminology more directly.
素 here means "plain / fundamental".
