culture
Originally a Buddhist term translating Sanskrit vīrya - one of the six perfections (六度 liùdù), meaning unwavering, joyful effort in practice. In modern usage it's secularised to mean 'keep getting better', frequently in the formal phrase 不断精进 (bùduàn jīngjìn) on résumés, company mottos, and study plans.
register
Slightly elevated. In casual speech you'd say 进步 (jìnbù, improve) or 提高 (tígāo, raise [one's level]); 精进 sounds purposeful and earnest, with a faint religious or martial-arts overtone.
