管仲 and 晏婴 were chancellors of the state of Qi more than a century apart: Guan Zhong made Duke Huan the first hegemon among the lords, and Yan Ying served three dukes and was famous for living simply. Guan Zhong says of his old friend 生我者父母,知我者鲍子也 'my parents gave me life, but it is Master Bao who knows me', the friendship behind 管鲍之交.

The chapter also tells of Yan Ying's coachman, who drove the chancellor's carriage so puffed up with pride that his wife asked to leave him. He mended his ways, and Yan Ying made him an official. The coachman's swagger, 意气扬扬, is the root of 洋洋得意.
