Recorded by Li Shizhen in the 16th-century 《本草纲目》, 竹茹 is the band of pale fiber scraped from the stem of dànzhú 淡竹 or kǔzhú 苦竹 after the green epidermis is shaved off. In the TCM materia medica it is classified as cooling (清热) and used for irritability, nausea in pregnancy, and phlegm-heat coughs.
