history
The name is a historical misnomer. When Oviraptor was unearthed in 1923 it was lying over a nest assumed to belong to Protoceratops — hence 'egg-thief'. In the 1990s, embryos inside those eggs were identified as Oviraptor's own, revealing the dinosaur was actually protecting its nest.
